Meta Keywords are Old News
Did you know that most engines have shifted away from using the keywords listed in meta tags? If you’re still using a meta tag to define your page’s keywords, get with the times!
I’m writing about this topic because I spent the last week frantically trying to arm this blog with everything it needs in order to be competitive for top search engine results. I will try and go over all of those things in due time, but for today I will be focusing on just one aspect of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
One of the many important things that I learned is that advanced search engines like Google no longer use the keywords offered in meta tags. Meta tags have always been an area with high abuse potential, and Google just won’t stand for that. It is never a good idea to try and “beat the system”. Google will find out, and they will place you in their sandbox.
Keywords are now almost exclusively acquired by analyzing a page’s content. (They can also be found in a page’s URL, and within the anchor text of backlinks to your site.) It is always good to include your desired keywords in the content of your pages, but only to a certain extent.
Optimizing your website for search engine spiders will help to bring in more traffic, and that should be one of your highest priorities as a webmaster. I will offer more SEO tips in the future, so if you’re interested, please do subscribe.
